Narrative Overview: Scholarly Activity
As the Department Personnel Committee noted in my seventh year reappointment letter, I have "formed tight and mutually-beneficial links between" my "teaching, service, and research." For instance, my research program informs my leadership on campus, including chairing the American Democracy Project and advising the Fredonia Democracy Initiative, and my courses that focus on political, presidential, and leadership communication.
Since joining the Fredonia faculty, I have established a record of scholarly achievement that has grown over the years. I have disseminated scholarly research in all three major venues: presentations at academic conferences, publications through editorial review (e.g., a book chapter), and publication through peer review in academic journals. Thus, my scholarship has been recognized by experts in the field beyond Fredonia. In light of these achievements, my record shows promise of continuing development.
My research program, which is rooted in my personal and professional background, helps me advance conversations about political issues and discern how rhetoric supports advocates' promotion of policies and crafting of solutions. The research questions I investigate are driven by my desire to understand the role of communication in public settings, namely politics. Specifically, my research program includes examining how congresswomen use rhetoric that urges civility, relationship building, and contributes to the media’s gendered framing of women in politics. This endeavor contributes to my research goal of uncovering the rhetorical construction of bipartisanship.
My scholarly contributions during this review period include publications, presentations, and engagement scholarship such as the voter mobilization assignment discussed under the "Teaching" heading. Since my last review, I published one peer-reviewed manuscript and have two book chapters "in press." I have also submitted one peer-reviewed manuscript for a second round of publication consideration. Finally, I am revising a fourth manuscript that has been accepted pending revisions requested by two peer reviewers.
