Service:
Activities Supporting the Communication Discipline
In this section, I explain how I have served the academic discipline of Communication. Communication is a discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication. My particular area of study is humanistic/rhetorical in nature. My service commitments demonstrate my obligation to promoting widespread understanding and appreciation of the importance of communication in our everyday lives. When deciding how I can best serve the discipline, I ask myself if the opportunity enables me to use my knowledge about communication to advance scholarly inquiry into the field and support others' pedagogical quests.

Serving on an editorial review board is an important role in the academic publishing process. As a member of the editorial review board for these journals, I peer reviewed manuscript submissions while also contributing to the direction and objective of the journal. I used my knowledge of political communication and rhetorical criticism to provide high-quality reviews of manuscripts. This included examining content in a critical manner and respectfully challenging an author's assertions when necessary. My own publication experience, doctoral studies, and research background positioned me to analyze content on topics for accuracy, relevance, and significance. My efforts and recommendations helped regulate the quality of the content that the journals published.

Due to relationships I have formed with publishers, the undergraduate courses that I teach, and my research background, publishers have asked me to review textbooks. Throughout my reviews, I evaluated the quality of the material presented in the textbook. I paid particular attention to how the textbook complemented, broadened, and deepened information on rhetorical criticism and/or political communication so as to help undergraduates better understand the subject. In each review, I also evaluated the significance of the textbook, its usefulness to a certain audience, and offered suggestions for future directions the author(s) could take.
