Service:
Activities Supporting the Department of Communication
In this section, I explain how I have served the Department of Communication. My service commitments demonstrate an obligation I feel towards promoting widespread understanding and appreciation of the importance of communication in our everyday lives. When deciding how I can best serve the department, I ask myself if the opportunity enables me to use my knowledge about communication, pedagogy, technology, and civic engagement to advance the department's mission to foster understanding of the role, process, and practice of communication through teaching, research, and service. I begin this section with an overview of the key department service positions I have held during this review period.

Internship Coordinator
- 2016 - 2021: Internship Director, Department of Communication
Since I took over as internship director for the department, I have overseen over 140 internships. As the department's internship director I notify majors of internship opportunities, help students complete their learning contracts, offer advice on how to solve problems they encounter at their internship, and supply suggestions for developing their networking and professional skills. I am also the person who coordinates internships with the Career Development Office and communicates regularly with site supervisors. Additionally, I read and grade students' written assignments including bi-weekly journals, mid-semester and final self-evaluations, and final reflection essays. You can see a complete list of course assignments here and this link takes you to a PDF that explains the course grading policies. In addition to these materials, each intern also receives a syllabus. I also maintain an OnCourse web page for the course and use OnCourse to touch base with interns every few weeks. To support student development through internship experiences, I have contacted community members, such as Lakeshore Family Center, to see if they would consider creating an internship partnership with the department. I also field questions from people who are considering establishing an internship program. In addition, I initiated a program that enables interns to showcase their work and inform other students about their internship experiences. This occurs via social media. Here is a sample of the content that was included in the "Spotlight On An Intern" post. You can also view the internship-related posts that I have written by visiting the Department of Communication Facebook page.

During the Spring of 2018, Dr. Lohiser and I also executed a 90-minute "Mastering the Professional Interview" workshop. We created a website (found here) that provided students with additional interviewing tips and our PowerPoint. You can also view the PowerPoint here. Knowing that students gain a lot by hearing from alumni, we invited a 2017 graduate to speak with students about her work with the Comedy Center in Jamestown, internship opportunities, and interviewing tips. |
